Sectors, which parts of the market are leading
On this page
The stock market is made of sectors, such as technology, energy and health care. The Sectors page shows which are up and which are down today, how each has done over longer periods, and which companies make up each one.
#Today
Open Sectors in the Finance section bar. The overview also has a Sectors card with the same tiles.
Tiles for today and a table for longer periods. Each sector is tracked by a fund whose ticker appears under its name.
- 1Today's move for each sector
- 2One day to one year
- 3Each sector is a fund; select a row to open it
The Today card has one tile for each of the eleven sectors: Energy, Technology, Real Estate, Utilities, Materials, Health Care, Industrials, Financials, Consumer Discretionary, Communication Services and Consumer Staples. They run from the strongest sector at top left to the weakest. Green means up and red means down, and a deeper color means a bigger move. Each tile gives the day's percentage change and the ticker of the fund that stands for the sector. Select a tile to open that fund's page.
#Over longer periods
The Performance card adds the return of each sector over 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, YTD (so far this year) and 1 year. A bar behind each figure shows its size compared with the others in the same column, so the leader and the laggard in each period stand out. These are price returns of the sector funds. Select a sector to open its fund.
#What is inside a sector
Top 20 holdings by sector has a tab for each sector. It lists the twenty largest companies in that sector's fund, each priced, with its Weight, the share of the fund it makes up. The note under the card gives the date of the holdings file the figures come from. Select the whole fund under a table to open the fund's page.
The side column carries the day's markets news.
#Common questions
Why are the sectors tracked through funds?
A sector has no single price. Finance uses the Select Sector SPDR funds, one for each sector, as the stand-in for each sector, and shows their prices and returns.
Which sector is a company in?
A company's page shows its sector and industry in the About card and under its name.
Does a green sector mean I should buy it?
No. The tiles show what happened, and nothing on Finance is investment advice.
